When it comes to silk sheets, we have a few strongly held beliefs:

The Best Elements of Silk Sheets

The fiber: Whether it’s a silk bed sheet, pillowcase, or silk duvet, quality silk bedding begins with silk fiber. Raw silk is harvested from the cocoons of silkworms, graded for quality, and woven into silk sheets. Silk is graded letters A, B, or C in quality, with Grade A being the best: long-strand silk from cocoons that are pearly white in color. Silk grades are also further differentiated by number; Grade A silk comes in A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A, and 6A, with 6A being the highest and finest quality silk. For any type of silk, Grade 6A is the finest quality available in the marketplace. All Mulberry Park Silks sheets are made from pure mulberry silk, Grade 6A.

The weight: Another important element to evaluating silk sheets is “momme.” Similar to thread count in cotton sheets and bamboo sheets, momme is a weight measurement that represents the density of silk fiber in the fabric. A higher momme count means proportionately more silk is used in the fabric, and it is of better quality. Higher momme count silk also contains thicker, stronger yarns. At Mulberry Park Silks, our sheets and pillowcases come in a range of momme weights, from 19 to 30 momme. Our 19 momme sheets equate to around 600 thread count fabric; these are our most affordable option and wonderful for anyone looking to try silk for the first time. Our 22 momme sheets and bedding are our most popular, and are a step up in weight, feel, and cost, with 30 momme sheets being our heaviest and most luxurious option. We don’t ever recommend purchasing silk sheets that are less than 19 momme weight. (Pro tip: All silk is labeled with momme weight. If you don’t see momme weight specified, chances are the sheets are not real silk). You can learn more about momme here.

The weave and design: High-quality silk sheets are usually made in a charmeuse weave, which is soft and lustrous on one side with a soft, dull finish on the reverse. When making your bed, the fitted sheet is placed with the smooth side up, and the flat sheet goes on with the smooth side down, so that you are between the two softest surfaces. Design details also play a part in assessing the quality of pure silk bedding. For example, many silk pillowcases feature a “hidden zipper” closure; while this may be aesthetically acceptable, sleeping on a zipper can be uncomfortable for some people. In that case, you should look for a pillowcase with an envelope closure, with a wide enough flap to hold your pillow firmly in place. How Silk Sheets Help Skin and Hair

As a protein-based natural fiber, silk delivers unique benefits to both hair and skin. Silk is wonderful for taming bed head, hair breakage, and knots. The smooth surface of a mulberry silk pillowcase allows your hair to simply glide across the surface friction free; no friction means no tangles! In fact, silk pillowcases are frequently recommended for individuals experiencing hair loss from chemotherapy, as they are the ideal environment for protecting fragile hair and encouraging regrowth. Similarly, silk is absolutely gentle and non-irritating to skin. This helps minimize sleep wrinkles (again, it’s the friction free environment. Even the finest Egyptian cotton sheets contain tiny fibers that can pull and tug at your hair and skin as you sleep).

Silk bedding also helps your hair and skin retain natural moisture. Like hair, silk is protein-based; silk protein, known as sericin, can be found as an ingredient in many high-end hair and skin products. A cotton sheet is very different; cotton is by nature absorbent, and can actually pull moisture from your hair and skin overnight.

Silk fabric is also naturally non-irritating and resistant to mold and mites. This is uniquely beneficial to anyone with sensitive skin. Many dermatologists recommend sleeping on a silk bedding set to their patients who are prone to allergies and skin irritation.

How Silk Sheets Improve Sleep Quality

Who can put a price on a great night’s sleep? Along with all the beauty benefits, and luxurious feel, a silk sheet set can actually keep you sleeping comfortably by helping regulate your body temperature. This is due to the unique structure of silk fiber, which wicks away moisture to keep you dry and helps maintain body temperature in any condition; your cotton percale or sateen weave sheets cannot do that, no matter how expensive they are. Silk bed linen is a great choice for all seasons, serving as cooling sheets in warmer temperatures and insulating you to stay snug and cozy when it’s cold outside.

Reasons Silk is Better than Satin

Only pure natural silk delivers the unique health, wellness, and beauty benefits we’ve described. This is why silk pillowcases and bedding have become so popular. Unfortunately, along with that popularity, the marketplace has attracted unscrupulous merchants who attempt to represent petroleum based rayon or polyester satin as genuine silk. Do not be fooled: Silk and satin are not the same thing. Silk is a natural fiber, while satin is entirely man made with none of silk’s many benefits.

So how can you tell the difference between a silk and satin sheet? Here are a few quick tips:

Silk has a beautiful, rich luster, while satin is shiny.
Genuine silk sheets will be labeled as such both on the product description and product label. Be wary of descriptions such as “satin silk” or “silk weave” which are meant to mislead you.
Watch the price point. If the price of an item is too good to be true, it is likely satin, not silk. As a guideline, we say that you should be suspicious of any pillowcase priced lower than $20. It is probably satin or a silk blend.
