Municipal Solid Waste: A Global and Local Issue
We’ve all heard the term “fast fashion,” used to describe hastily manufactured, lower quality clothing that worn for a season or two and then discarded, only to decay in landfills But sheets, towels, and bedding also wind up in landfills; in 2018, the most recent year for which data is available, the Environmental Protection Agency reports that U.S. landfills received more than 11 million tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) textiles, including both apparel and home textiles. This is up from 6.2 million tons in 2020, a troubling trend.
As consumers, we can do our part to mitigate this environmental crisis with efforts like recycling used textiles and making more sustainable purchases, including biodegradable fabrics like cotton, bamboo, and pure mulberry silk.
Mulberry Park Silk Sheets: Sustainable and Biodegradable
The Mulberry Park Silks design team places a good bit of emphasis on the beauty and wellness properties of our silk pillowcases, sheets, and accessories. You’ll often see us sharing information about how our pure silk is hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites; regulates body temperature for comfortable sleep; protects sensitive skin; and keeps hair and skin hydrated. These are all due to silk fiber being a protein-based textile spun from the protective, hygienic cocoon of the bombyx mori silkworm.
Along with those undeniable beauty benefits, the natural, protein-based composition of pure silk also makes it biodegradable (this is why pure silk is sometimes used for medical purposes such as dissolvable stitches). While recycling fabric is always ideal, silk will naturally decompose over time.
“We often remind our clients that only pure silk fabric delivers the unique beauty and wellness benefits they expect,” says Mulberry Park Silks Associate Brand Manager, Zoe Doyle. “The same thing applies to sustainability. Satin sheets, for example, are made from petroleum-based polyester and will not naturally biodegrade. This is just one more wonderful property of pure silk.”
Independent Certification: An Extra Step for Silk Safety
Along with being hypoallergenic, Mulberry Park Silks sheets are independently certified STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® for safety. The STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® was developed by European textile institutes as a means to reduce the environmental footprint of the textile industry. It is a global testing and accreditation program that sets standards for the screening of chemicals and harmful substances in fabrics and other consumer textiles. Textiles can only be certified if all components meet the rigorous test criteria submitted from the raw material through the finished product.
We believe that participating in this rigorous certification program is one more way of giving consumers the highest possible confidence in our silk. We take pride in the STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® logos and labels that can be found on our website and products. More importantly, we value the trust our clients have placed in us. We will continue to provide safe, sustainable silk sheets, pillowcases, and bedding of the very highest quality.
Styling Options for Luxurious Mulberry Park Silk Sheets
One of the guiding principles of living sustainably is using only what you need. We sell the very best silk sheets, and want to help you create your perfect silk bedding ensemble. This is why we sell our silk bedding in a variety of weights and sizes and in complete sheet sets as well as à la carte separates. Our pure mulberry silk bedding set includes a flat sheet, fitted sheet, and two pillowcases (one silk pillowcase in size Twin XL). Choose a silk sheet set in 19, 22, or 30 momme weights to suit your style and budget. You can also purchase silk pillowcases, individual silk bed sheets, and silk comforter covers (duvet cover) separately. This works for those sleepers who opt to forgo the top sheet and sleep directly under a comforter encased in our silk duvet cover.
Our Silk is Easy To Care For
Lastly, our pure silk bedding is easy to care for. You can machine wash our silk bed sheet collection; pillowcases; and duvet covers at home with only a little more effort than washing your regular cotton sheets. There is never any need to dry clean, sparing both your silk bedding and the environment exposure to heavy-duty dry-cleaning chemicals.
As always, the Mulberry Park Silks design team is here to answer any questions you have about our beautiful silk bedding and silk accessories. We can provide customized recommendations and will even send you swatch samples of our silk fabric to review at home. Feel free to email or give us a call.
