Silk Sheets: The Ultimate Hair Elixir You Never Knew You Needed

Caring for Mulberry Park Silks Sheets is Easy This article offers a deep dive into why silk sheets and a silk pillowcase should be an essential part of your healthy hair regimen. Silk does so much to level up your hair routine, from preventing bedhead to nurturing new growth. You’ll learn about the special properties of silk and why it’s so great for different types of hair and hair issues; how to choose high-quality silk sheets; and how to care for them so they last.

Silk Sheets and Pillowcases: Your Secret Weapon for Healthy Hair

Silk sheets have been considered a luxurious indulgence for—quite literally—thousands of years. But they are also a game changer for the health of your hair. Let’s take a look at some of the special properties of silk and explore why it is really the ideal environment for any hair texture or hair type.

In the pursuit of luscious, healthy hair, we often find ourselves exploring an array of hair care products like expensive conditioners, shampoo, and keratin treatments. And that’s great. But here at Mulberry Park Silks, we also know that achieving, glossy, beautiful locks comes down to sleeping on the best bedding for hair: pure mulberry silk sheets. A long-held secret among beauty insiders, the transformative power of silk sheets for hair and skin has grown widely in recent years, and with good reason. Silk sheets can help keep your hair hydrated; minimize breakage, frizz, and tangles; and nourish the scalp while protecting and encouraging regrowth. Read on to learn how silk sheets and pillowcases are key to pampering your tresses while you sleep. (Note: for purposes of this blog, we will use the terms “silk sheets” and “silk pillowcases” interchangeably. However, we do sell our luxurious silk pillowcase separately).

Silk is a protein-based fiber

Like human hair (and skin) mulberry silk is made from the protein-rich, protective fiber of the bombyx mori silkworm. Mulberry silk fibers are coated with fibroin, a protein that makes them naturally antibacterial, antifungal, and resistant to dust mites and mold (more on that later). Silk also contains 18 helpful amino acids that work to condition and maintain the natural moisture of your hair, skin, and scalp. This comes in stark contrast to cotton, which is absorbent and can actually pull moisture away from your hair and skin.

The protective, hydrating properties of silk make it ideal for anyone with naturally dry hair, or hair that is difficult to keep moisturized such as curly hair (which has a different shape follicle and embeds differently in the scalp than straight hair); gray hair, which tends to be more wiry; Black hair, which is more coiled; and hair that has been damaged by hair color.

Silk is friction free

The soft, smooth, charmeuse weave means the surface of mulberry silk sheets and pillowcases are nearly friction free. The fabric of silk sheets and pillowcases won’t tug or tear at the delicate hair follicle like the tiny fibers in a cotton pillowcase or sheets will. Instead, your hair and skin glide across the surface of silk (which also makes it great for preventing sleep wrinkles).

The friction-free surface of silk is excellent for protecting any type of hair, especially curly hair. As we mentioned, the structure of a curly hair shaft is more vulnerable to breakage and benefits from the smooth surface of silk. Similarly, anyone experiencing hair loss—whether from medical treatment, male pattern baldness, alopecia areata, female pattern hair loss, or simply thinning hair with age—should be sleeping on silk. The gentle environment of a silk pillowcase is soothing to the scalp and protects delicate hair growth. Silk sheets are great for babies and can help prevent the bald patch and patchy hair loss that occurs from sleeping in one position. Silk sheets also protect your style—whether it’s a blow dry or a natural curl—by minimizing frizz, breakage, and bedhead. That means your style lasts longer with fewer trips to a pricey hair salon.

Silk is hypoallergenic and pure

The protective environment of the silkworm cocoon is naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to bacteria, mold, and mites. This means silk pillowcases are pure and protective of your hair and skin.

You may not think much about this (and we don’t blame you!) but your cotton pillowcase can be a haven for bacteria, mold, and dust. And while the effect on your hair may seem minimal, dust from your pillowcase can actually settle in your hair and trigger allergies and discomfort. The hypoallergenic and mold- and mite-resistant properties of a silk pillowcase put the brakes on all these potential contaminants that can irritate hair and skin. In fact, dermatologists recommend sleeping on a silk pillowcase for patients with acne, eczema, sensitive skin, and hair/scalp conditions like seborrheic dermatitis.

Silk is comfortable

Of course, silk is known as the ultimate luxury fabric. Truly, nothing compares to the indulgent feeling of silk against your skin and hair. Along with this sumptuous feel, silk is also naturally temperature regulating, which means that it keeps you cool in summer, warm in winter, and sleeping comfortably year-round.

  1. Hand wash or wash on a silk-only cycle.
  2. Use a detergent specially formulated for silk like Heritage Park Silk and Wool Detergent. Never use fabric softener on silk.
  3. Place your silk sheets and pillowcases in separate fine mesh laundry bags before putting in the washer to protect them from damage during the cycle.
  4. Don’t wring out your silk; if it is still wet, blot it on a clean towel.
  5. Hang your silk to dry indoors or outside away from direct sunlight. Never put silk sheets in the dryer, as heat will damage silk fiber.
  6. You can iron silk if necessary. Follow these guidelines carefully.

Store your silk sheets in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Consider using breathable fabric bags to protect them from dust and dirt.
