Do You Need Lighter Weight Silk Sheets for the Summer?

Silk sheets are wonderfully comfortable and especially cool in the summer. But do you need to switch to a lighter-weight silk when the mercury soars? This article from Mulberry Park Silks explains how to pick the perfect weight silk sheets to keep you sleeping cool all summer long.

Most of us are familiar with the annual ritual of putting away our winter woolens and heavy denim in favor of lighter-weight, breezier clothing for the summer months. Some of us make a similar switch for heavy bedding: for example, swapping out a flannel sheet set or sateen sheets for a lighter-weight cotton percale sheet set.

But what about silk sheets? As we always say, high-quality mulberry silk sheets are temperature-regulating to keep you comfortable all year. But should you switch to lighter-weight silk for sleeping in the summer months? The experts at Mulberry Park Silks are here with answers. We'll explain how silk weight is measured and evaluate the performance of different weight silks to help you find a silk bedding set to keep you cool and comfortable all summer.

Momme: A Measure of Silk Weight

Not Sure Which Momme Is Best?

Silk sheets are measured in momme, which is the standard unit of weight and density of silk. Momme represents the weight of one piece of silk fabric that is 45 inches wide and 100 yards long, in pounds. That weight is a balance between the density of the silk weave and the thickness of individual fibers. Higher momme silk indicates a denser weave and, consequently, a heavier fabric. Higher momme weight also indicates that the individual silk fibers are thicker. This can impact the fabric's drape, sheen, and overall feel.

It is also essential to distinguish the term "momme weight" from "thread count," which is used to describe the density of other fabrics, including cotton sheets and bamboo sheets. Momme and thread count are not the same thing.

Mulberry Park Silks Sheets Come in Three Momme Weights

Mulberry Park Silks offers real silk sheets (and silk pillowcases) in three weights.

19 momme: Our 19 momme sheets are the lightest weight we sell. With a competitive price point, these sheets are ideal for anyone new to silk looking to try it out. They are made with less silk than our other styles and, as such, tend to be a bit more delicate.

22 momme: Our 22 momme silk bedding is a step up in both weight and price. It is our most versatile and popular momme weight option. We refer to our 22 momme collection as our "signature" silk bedding; it is our best-seller and features the widest range of sizes and style options. It is soft and luxurious to the touch; and breathable; and it drapes beautifully with a classic lustrous look and smooth feel.

30 momme: Our 30 momme sheets and pillowcases represent the ultimate in luxury and are our most costly sheet set. With the highest density of silk, the tightest weave, and the thickest silk strands, 30 momme are our most durable sheets.

Do You Need to Switch to Lightweight Silk for Summer?

The answer to this depends on personal preference and the momme weight of the sheets you currently own. Silk is a wonderful choice for cooling sheets, but a hot sleeper may choose to make adjustments to a lighter-weight silk bed sheet in summer.

If you currently own 30 momme silk sheets, you may find them a bit denser than you would like for the very warmest months. Keep in mind that momme is a measure of weight, and 30 momme sheets are heavier in feel. Some sleepers prefer a lighter-weight sheet that is a bit more breathable during the summertime. If this is you, we suggested investing in a set of 22 momme silk sheets for summer use. Another option is keeping your 30 momme fitted sheet; removing your 30 momme silk flat sheet and blankets, and using just a light comforter in a silk duvet cover on top.

If you currently have 22 momme weight sheets, you likely don't need to switch for the summer. Remember that 22 momme silk sheets are considered the "goldilocks" of silk bedding - they're just right for most people, regardless of the season. They offer the perfect balance of lightness and durability, making them versatile enough for year-round use. The slightly lighter weave allows for optimal breathability to keep you cool on warm nights without sacrificing the signature smooth, friction-free feel of silk.

"Another benefit of 22 momme silk sheets is how they maintain the lustrous appearance and luxurious feel that silk is known for," said Zoe Doyle, Mulberry Park Silks Associate Brand Manager. "That smooth sumptuous finish and versatility is why our 22 momme sheets are our signature best sellers and one of the best cooling sheets on the market."

If you are sleeping on 19 momme sheets, they will do a nice job of keeping you cool. You may want to consider upgrading to a heavier momme for a more luxurious feel and weight as cooler temperatures approach.

Moving to lighter-weight silk sheets for summer is, ultimately, a matter of personal preference. No matter the weight, Mulberry Park Silks sheets will keep your summer bed stylish and comfortable and deliver the beauty and wellness benefits you count on.
