If you're in the market for a new bedding set, this blog is definitely for you. The article outlines various types of bedding materials; discusses criteria for choosing the best bedding; and explains how to care for bedding to make it last.

If you're a regular visitor here at Mulberry Park Silks, you know how much we value transparency. We spend a lot of time educating our clients about the many benefits of silk bedding; offering tips on how to get the best value for your silk dollar; and explaining how to care for your silk sheets to make them last. We also welcome comparisons between our silk and the competition (like our recent post comparing Mulberry Park Silks pillowcases to Blissy).

Today, we're taking a step back to examine how silk compares to all your other bedding choices. We want to deliver the information you need to help you choose the best sheets for your needs (spoiler alert: we still think you'll choose silk). In this comprehensive guide, we'll walk you through the various types of bedding materials; explore their unique properties; discuss important factors to consider when selecting bedding; and offer some care guidelines to keep your bedding looking and feeling great.

Understanding Different Types of Sheet Fabric

With the many options available for bed linens, understanding the attributes, benefits, and drawbacks of each fabric is an important first step in narrowing down your preferences.

Cotton: Cotton is by far the best known, and most popular, fabric for sheeting. You can purchase cotton sheets in a range of quality and price points, from budget cotton sheets at discount or big box stores to high-quality Egyptian cotton sheets at luxury boutiques and department stores. The two most popular styles for cotton sheet fabric are percale weave and sateen weave. Cotton percale sheets are crisp, cool, airy, and breathable; they have a matte finish and are good for "hot sleepers." Most luxury hotels use percale sheet sets. Sateen sheets are a heavier weave that is smooth and lustrous with a "silky" feel and a drapey look that connotes luxury, romance, and warmth. Cotton bed sheets also come in other weaves and weights such as flannel sheets and t-shirt sheets. Cotton sheets are easy to launder but may require ironing if you want them wrinkle-free. High-quality cotton sheets are an investment, but they should last for quite some time. The drawback to cotton is its absorbency; cotton can pull moisture away from your hair and skin. Unlike some fabrics, it absorbs sweat but doesn't dry quickly, leaving you feeling damp, a concern for hot sleepers.

Cotton Blends: Cotton blends combine the comfort and breathability of cotton with the strength and easy care of synthetic fibers like polyester. These blends offer a balance of comfort, durability, and affordability, making them a popular choice for many households. One big benefit to cotton blends is they often do not require ironing. However, the material is generally not as high of a quality as pure cotton, nor as breathable.

Microfiber Sheets

Microfiber. Microfiber bedding is made from ultra-fine synthetic fibers, usually polyester, that are tightly woven to create a soft and lightweight fabric. These soft knit sheets are comfortable, affordable, and resist wrinkles. However, they are a man-made polyester-based fabric that is thin and tends to wear out quickly. Microfiber sheets are also not biodegradable.

Microfiber Sheets

Semi-Synthetic Rayon Sheets: Modal, Tencel, Bamboo, and Eucalyptus are all types of rayon, a semi-synthetic fiber made from different plant-based materials. These sheets have some appealing properties-soft, hypoallergenic-but are often resource-intensive to produce, as the plant pulp must be processed.

    • Modal is made from beech tree pulp, harvested from sustainably managed forests. It is soft, smooth, and breathable. Modal also resists shrinkage, making it a durable and easy-care option. Modal is also hypoallergenic, and a good choice for sensitive skin. High-quality modal sheets can be quite expensive.

    • Tencel™ is the brand name for Lyocell, which is an eco-friendly fiber made from the pulp of farmed eucalyptus plants. plant-based materials. These sheets are soft, smooth (a sateen feel), breathable, and moisture-wicking. Eucalyptus sheets are also hypoallergenic. The downside to Tencel™ is that it tends to wrinkle and takes some time to reach maximum softness. It can also be quite pricey for a high-quality sheet set. The differences lie in the raw materials and manufacturing processes used.

  • Bamboo: Derived from bamboo grass pulp, bamboo bedding is soft, silky, and lightweight. Bamboo sheets boast moisture-wicking, breathable, and naturally antibacterial properties. It is also hypoallergenic. A high-quality bamboo sheet set, like the popular Cozy Earth brand, can be quite expensive.

Linen: Linen is made from the fibers of the flax plant and is known for its breathability, lightweight feel, and moisture-wicking properties. Linen is also hypoallergenic. Although initially stiff and slightly rough, linen sheets grow softer and more comfortable with each wash. It's also highly durable, making it a worthwhile investment for those who appreciate its unique texture and laid-back aesthetic. Keep in mind that linen wrinkles easily, which can be a dealbreaker for some but adds to its charm for others.

Silk: Silk is a natural protein fiber produced by silkworms and is the epitome of luxury in the bedding world. Prized for its unparalleled softness, smoothness, and elegant drape, silk bedding offers a truly indulgent sleep experience with a sumptuous feel. Because silk is derived from the protective environment of the silkworm cocoon, it is naturally temperature regulating and comfortable for year-round use; hypoallergenic; resistant to mold and dust mites; and non-irritating to anyone with sensitive skin or allergies. The smooth, friction-free surface of silk charmeuse sheets helps minimize tangles, bedhead, and frizz, making it particularly beneficial for those with longer hair or prone to unruly locks. Additionally, silk's smooth surface glides gently over the skin, minimizing the formation of sleep wrinkles. As a protein-based material, silk helps keep hair and skin hydrated throughout the night, which can be especially advantageous for those with dry or sensitive skin. Silk is also biodegradable.

Mulberry Park Silks sheets are made from the highest-grade 6A mulberry silk and woven in a charmeuse style, offering a soft and lustrous feel on one side with a subtle matte finish on the reverse. They come in a range of weights and colors and are OEKO-TEX® certified as safe from harmful toxins and chemicals. Silk sheets are a bit of an up-front investment, but with proper care-they can be washed right at home in your machine-will look and feel beautiful over time.

Things to Consider When Choosing a Sheet Set

Rayon Sheets

We asked Helena Hendricks, Associate Brand Manager at luxury linen retailer, Fine Linen and Bath, what factors to consider when choosing a sheet set.

"Choosing a sheet set is an intensely individual process," she said. "While some brands and styles stand out for luxury, comfort, and performance, personal preference will always play a part in evaluating your bedding options."

Here are some key considerations:

  1. How You Sleep: Your individual sleep style should play a significant role in choosing the perfect bedding. Hot sleepers may prefer breathable, moisture-wicking materials like silk, linen, or Tencel, while those who tend to feel cold might appreciate a weightier cotton sateen or flannel sheet.

Mulberry Park Silks sheets are temperature regulating to keep you cool in warm conditions and warm when it's cold outside. They are ideal for year-round comfort.

  1. Cost: Bedding prices vary greatly depending on the material, thread count, or momme weight, brand, and size. No matter your budget, you want to get the very best value within that range. Keep in mind that luxury bedding may come with a steeper initial price tag but typically features higher-quality fabric and craftsmanship that offer better durability, comfort, and longevity.

Our pure silk sheets are an investment, but with proper care will last in beauty and comfort for a long time.

  1. Look. The appearance of your bedding can significantly impact the overall aesthetic of your bedroom. Consider the color, pattern, and finish that best complements your personal style and existing home decor. Some materials, like silk and sateen, have a subtle sheen, while others, like percale and linen, have a more matte appearance. Avoid anything too trendy that you will tire of quickly; instead, choose a classic bed sheet style that you can accessorize with decorative pillows, blankets, or throw pillows as the mood strikes. Also think about whether you want a complete bed linen ensemble, which typically includes bedding essentials like sheets, pillowcases, duvet cover or comforter, decorative pillow shams, and perhaps a bed skirt. If you are purchasing a bedding bundle, choose a bedding collection that is neutral and can be accessorized.

The timeless design of Mulberry Park Silks sheets will enhance any décor. We offer a range of color options, from subtle neutrals and pastels to bold bright shades and rich jewel tones.

  1. Ease of Care. Different bedding materials require different levels of attention. Consider how much time and effort you're willing to invest in maintaining your bedding. Cotton, microfiber, and most semi-synthetic rayons are generally easy to care for and can be machine-washed and tumble-dried. You may be surprised to learn that other fabrics like silk and linen are machine washable.

Mulberry Park Silks sheets can easily be laundered in your machine at home.

  1. Beauty Benefits: Some bedding materials offer unique beauty benefits. Silk, for example, is known for its ability to reduce hair frizz and minimize facial wrinkles caused by friction against the pillowcase. Silk is also naturally hydrating to skin and hair. Modal and other semi-synthetic rayons are also gentle on hair and skin but do not have the hydrating properties of silk.

Mulberry Park Silks sheets prevent tangles, frizz, and breakage to hair; minimize facial wrinkles; and keep hair and skin hydrated.

  1. Health and Wellness Benefits: If you are prone to allergies or have silk-sensitive skin, absolutely select a hypoallergenic fabric like silk or modal; avoid any polyester or microfiber sheeting.

Mulberry Park Silks are hypoallergenic and resistant to mold, dust mites, and irritants. Silk sheets are recommended by dermatologists for patients with sensitive skin or conditions like acne, eczema, and psoriasis.

  1. Certifications: When shopping for bedding, look for certifications that ensure the product meets stringent safety and environmental standards.OEKO-TEX® certification guarantees that the bedding is free from harmful substances and is safe for human use. The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certifies that the bedding is made from organic materials and meets social and environmental criteria throughout the supply chain.

Mulberry Park Silks sheets are OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified as safe from harmful toxins and chemicals.

  1. Brand Reputation: Bedding is an investment, and you deserve to purchase from a company with a proven track record of quality, customer satisfaction, and excellent customer service. Fortunately, so much information is easily found online. Read reviews and do your research. A trustworthy company will be transparent about the quality and origin of its bedding materials; its manufacturing process; and its customer service protocols. Consider the brand's values and commitment to sustainability, as this can indicate the overall quality and longevity of their products.

Mulberry Park Silks has a stellar reputation for quality, transparency, and customer service. Our headquarters, warehouse, and customer service offices are proudly located in Branford, CT, USA. You can email or even call to speak to a member of our help center team with any questions or concerns.

Protect Your Investment with Proper Care

Model Using Heritage Park Laundry Essentials to Wash Her Silk Bedding

Taking proper care of your bedding is the best way to make it last and perform beautifully over time. No matter the fabric or style, if your bedding is washable, here are some general guidelines to follow:

  • Always read the care label and follow the instructions. Pay particular attention to washing machine settings.
  • Wash your bedding regularly, at least every one to two weeks, to maintain freshness and remove allergens, sweat, and dead skin cells. If you have matching duvet covers and pillow shams, wash them at regular intervals (perhaps every second washing of your sheets) to maintain consistent wear.
  • Choose the proper detergent. We recommend a gentle, plant-based detergent like Heritage Park All-Purpose Detergent for cotton, bamboo, rayon, blends, and polyester. For protein-based fabrics like silk, use the enzyme-free Heritage Park Silk and Wool Detergent.
  • Never use bleach, which can fade and discolor fabric, or fabric softener/dryer sheets which cause a waxy build-up.
  • Wash bedding in its load to protect it from damage from clothing with zippers and hooks. You can also put sheets in mesh laundry bags to prevent snagging inside the washer or twisting around the agitator mechanism.
  • If your sheets can be dried, always do so on the lowest heat possible. Similarly, iron with care.
  • For sheets that hang dry, like silk, do so indoors or outside away from direct sunlight.
  • Store bedding in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.

Choosing the perfect bedding set is a highly personal decision that depends on your unique preferences, needs, and lifestyle. By understanding the various types of bedding materials and considering factors such as comfort, price, appearance, ease of care, and brand reputation, you can make an informed choice that will provide you with the best possible sleep experience. Pure silk bedding from Mulberry Park Silks offers the ultimate combination of luxury, comfort, and beauty benefits along with an indulgent and rejuvenating night's rest.
