A Leading Dermatologist Answers Your Questions About the Benefits of Silk Bedding

Qazi Cosmetic Clinic

At Mulberry Park Silks, we love educating our clients to the beauty, health, and wellness benefits of sleeping on silk. And we know that our silk pillowcases, sheets and bedding help skin and hair look and feel better. But you don’t need to take our word for it!

That’s why we’ve asked an expert to weigh in! Dr. Nadir Qazi, DO, a board-certified physician, cosmetic dermatology surgeon, and owner of Qazi Cosmetic Clinic in Irvine, California. We asked Dr. Qazi some of the most common questions we get about silk, and he shared his expertise.

Does sleeping on silk provide people with eczema or other skin conditions any benefits?

Dr. Qazi: “Silk is excellent to sleep on and provides many benefits for people with chronic skin conditions like eczema. Silk helps to lessen moisture loss during the night and reduce friction; it is softer and more soothing than other popular fabric choices for sheets. Because it chafes less, it is ideal for people who have eczema, rosacea, and acne. It is also an antimicrobial fabric, so it is helpful to prevent infections, especially on skin prone to irritation and acne.”

Does silk help with skin hydration?

Dr. Qazi: “Silk works on two levels to protect your skin and hair from dehydration as it is far less absorbent than other natural fibers. While we sleep, we lose moisture to the air and the fabrics surrounding us. Like cotton [does], silk doesn't absorb the natural oils from your skin and hair, leaving your skin with the natural protection these oils give it. In addition, because it is less absorbent, silk doesn't wick away your skin's moisture and water.”

Does silk help to reduce sleep wrinkles?

Dr. Qazi: “Silk helps prevent facial lines from forming. Permanent lines that are difficult to treat can be formed vertically from how we sleep. Because silk causes less friction, the folds and lines that form while you sleep are lessened.”

Does sleeping on silk help to reduce hair breakage, split ends, or frizzy hair?

Dr. Qazi: “Friction can lead to hair loss. Because silk is smoother than many other fabrics, [it helps] to maintain the health of your hair follicles. Since silk won't absorb your hair's natural oils, sleeping on silk helps to keep hair hydrated and reduces friction on your hair which in turn reduces breakages and split ends.”

Silk Bedding: A Beauty and Wellness Essential

Dr. Qazi’s expert opinion is a wonderful validation of something we’ve always known: pure mulberry silk pillowcases, sheets, and bedding can be an important part of your beauty routine. Whether it’s taming frizz, tangles and bedhead; minimizing fine lines and sleep wrinkles; or keeping your temperature comfortable and regulated, silk bedding can help you sleep and wake beautifully. Silk is also naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to mold, dust, and mites while keeping your skin and hair naturally moisturized while you sleep. When it comes to picking the perfect material for a better night’s sleep, silk is it! Even better: silk is the ultimate in luxury bedding, with an incomparable look and feel. Truly, nothing compares to silk.

Purchase Only Pure, Genuine Mulberry Silk

The growing popularity of silk means that there are many more options in the market for consumers to choose from. Of course, we love that silk is “having a moment’ but at the same time, this can make for confusion among silk buyers. Indeed, many companies sell inferior quality silk; silk blends; or even “silk feeling” artificial satin while claiming their products are pure silk.

Fortunately, there are telltale signs and things to look for when shopping for silk pillowcases, sheets, and bedding. Here are a few tips to guide you in your shopping:

Read the silk product description and the label

Genuine silk will be labeled 100 percent pure silk. You will also see the momme weight of the silk noted on the label (momme is a measurement of silk weight that is similar to thread count in cotton sheets) either in the product description or label. You may also see the silk grade listed (6A is the highest grade). Beware of vague descriptive words like “silky” or “silky feel” which are red flags that the product isn’t pure genuine silk.

Pay attention to silk price points

If the price of the “silk” you are considering seems too good to be true, it is likely not genuine silk (or at least not pure silk). Silk does, however, come in a variety of weights and grades; a lighter momme weight pillowcase or one made of lesser grade silk will be more affordable than its heavier, higher-grade counterpart. A good rule of thumb is that any pillowcase priced under $20 should raise red flags as it is likely not pure silk.

Buy from an established, trustworthy silk company

Silk’s recent popularity has attracted quite a few new companies to the marketplace. Some of these are less than forthcoming about the content and quality of their products. We recommend visiting the company’s website. Do they carry a full line of silk bedding? Do they disclose details about their products? Where are they located and what type of customer service do they offer? Many of these organizations are offshore companies who cannot answer questions in real time and are less than transparent about where they are located.
