A Mulberry Park Silks Pillowcase: A Travel Essential for 2023

With leisure travel approaching pre-pandemic levels, and business travel on the upswing as well, you may have a trip in your future. In fact, 2023 is projected to be a big year for travel, with 7 in 10 adults saying they plan to take to the road at some point.

Whether you’re driving or flying, even a short trip can offer a welcome change of scenery. (And if you are flying and it’s been a while, be sure to review the TSA rules for what you can fly with and the liquids rule for carry-on luggage. You should also check with your airline, as many carriers have instituted more restrictive luggage size and weight requirements, including for carry-on items).

Wherever you’re going and however you’re getting there, one must-have item definitely belongs on your 2023 packing list: a pure silk pillowcase from Mulberry Park Silks. Made from 100% pure silk of the highest quality (6A), packing a silk pillowcase is a great way to take a great night of beauty sleep on the road. Here’s why:

1. Health and Hygiene

Hotel rooms—even the finest establishments—are notorious for harboring germs, allergens, dust mites, and worse. Covering your hotel pillow with a silk pillowcase solves a number of these issues. First, silk fibers are naturally hypoallergenic, and resistant to mold, dust, and mites. It is non irritating to even the most sensitive skin, unlike a hotel pillowcase, which may have been laundered in harsh, chemical-laden commercial detergents. Additionally, a silk pillowcase is a wonderful hygienic barrier to both the hotel pillow and the standard pillowcase; we recommend slipping it over the cotton hotel pillowcase. At Mulberry Park Silks, we’ve taken the extra step of having all silk we sell certified STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®. This means that all of our products and their components have been tested against a list of over 400 harmful substances and determined to be safe. Read more about OEKO-TEX® here.

2. Gentle Comfort

As we just noted, silk is inherently non-irritating, which is why it is recommended for anyone with sensitive skin, including those dealing with acne, psoriasis, or other conditions . A silk pillowcase is also the height of comfort and luxury. Our pillowcases are made in a lustrous charmeuse weave, soft and smooth on one side with a dull finish on the reverse. Once you’ve grown accustomed to sleeping on a silk pillowcase, nothing else can compare. In fact, our 22 momme silk pillowcase and companion sleep mask bundle was recently showcased in Travel Noire’s Yahoo News article about traveling in luxury without breaking the bank.

3. Preventing Tangles and Wrinkles

The surface of a silk pillowcase is smooth and nearly friction free. Your hair and skin glide across the surface (unlike a cotton pillowcase, which has tiny fibers that can snag hair and pull at delicate skin). This means silk is wonderful at taming tangles and bed head while preventing frizz , breakage, and split ends. Similarly, sleeping on silk helps slow down the formation of sleep wrinkles, so you wake up looking and feeling refreshed without those pesky sleep lines.

4. Moisturizing for Hair and Skin

Model with Beautiful Skin

Like your hair and skin, silk fiber is protein-based. While absorbent cotton actually pulls moisture away from your hair and face, silk is gently nourishing and helps your hair and skin retain their natural moisture. This is particularly important when traveling, as climate-controlled hotel rooms tend to be quite dry and can definitely do a number on how your skin and hair feels.

5. Lightweight and Simple to Pack

We love talking about the weight of our silk, including the various options and how they are measured in momme (read about momme here). However, even the heaviest of our silk pillowcases won’t tip your luggage into the overweight category or take up much room in your suitcase. A silk pillowcase is a portable luxury, a bit of indulgence and self-care that you can happily—and easily—take with you wherever you go.

6. Lots of Size and Style Options

We offer silk pillowcases in three momme weights: 19, 22, and 30. You can read about how to pick the best momme weight pillowcase for your needs here. You can choose Standard, Queen, or King size (choose Queen or King size for travel as they will accommodate most hotel pillows); envelope or zipper closure; and a wide range of stylish colors and even limited edition prints. 7. Easy to Care For

Here’s one more benefit to traveling with your silk pillowcase: it’s easy to care for. Our silk is washable by hand or machine. We recommend using an enzyme-free detergent like Heritage Park Silk and Wool Detergent and washing on a gentle cycle in a mesh laundry bag. You can also hand-wash your silk pillowcase in a sink or basin (perfect for washing in a hotel if need be). It will air dry in an hour or two. Check out our silk care guidelines h ere.

One last thing to know: only pure mulberry silk offers these genuine health and beauty benefits. When buying a silk pillowcase for travel, watch out for unscrupulous sellers who will try to pass off a satin pillowcase or inferior blend as pure silk. They are NOT the same. Read about how to tell genuine silk from synthetic satin here.
