What Is Organic Silk and Do You Really Need It?

With so many choices in silk bedding and accessories, all the different terminology—even something straightforward like the word “organic”—can cause confusion for silk buyers. This article defines what organic silk is; explains why it is not truly necessary; and shows you what certifications to look for instead.

Organic Silk in Its Raw Form

No doubt about it: silk pillowcases, sheets, bedding, and accessories are must-have beauty essentials. The many benefits of sleeping on silk to hair, skin, and overall wellness are routinely documented in beauty blogs, magazines, national network talk shows, and on popular YouTube channels. You’ll also find them touted all over the media, including home publications, as the ultimate in luxury. At Mulberry Park Silks, we couldn’t agree more!

But the fact remains that many consumers don’t really know how to shop for silk, particularly because it comes with a set of unique terminology (for example, momme count, which is a measurement of weight similar to thread count). Here at Mulberry Park Silks, we consider it a privilege to educate our clients about how to shop smart for silk. Today, we’re addressing the topic of “organic silk” so that our clients continue to get the best value for their silk dollar.

What is Organic Silk?

Raw Silk Skeins

Organic silk refers to silk production conducted without use of synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. This means that the silk has been made using only natural methods, and is considered to be more environmentally friendly than conventional silk. At the same time, specialty organic silk is far more costly than conventional silk; more prone to damage from pests and diseases through the production process; and often lower quality, as the fibers tend to be shorter and more breakable.

While the decision to purchase organic silk is subjective and quite personal, there are some important reasons why it may not truly be necessary, particularly if you shop from a reputable silk company like Mulberry Park Silks. Indeed, many other factors come into play regarding the quality and safety of silk. Read on to learn more.

Mulberry Park Silks: Safe, Natural Bedding and Accessories

In the world of luxury bedding, silk fabric stands alone to represent the pinnacle of indulgence and luxury. Truly, nothing can compare to the feeling of sleeping on a pure silk pillowcase or sheet set. But our silk holds many other special properties that make it a sought-after, unique fabric:

Hypoallergenic: Silk is woven from the protective fibers of the silkworm cocoon, a pristine and hygienic environment. That makes silk inherently hypoallergenic, and a wonderful choice for anyone who suffers from allergies.

Resistant to mold and mites: Silk naturally repels mold and dust mites, two of the most common sources of allergies.

Non-irritating: A silk sheet is soft, gentle and non-irritating to even the most sensitive skin. Dermatologists often recommend sleeping on silk for their patients with sensitive skin or underlying conditions like acne or eczema (read more about what a leading dermatologist has to say about silk here).

Hydrating to skin and hair: Similar to hair and skin, silk fiber is protein based. Silk contains a range of nourishing amino acids, including fibroin. You will find fibroin,an ingredient in many high-end salon and spa products, because it is naturally moisturizing to your skin and hair. Unlike a cotton pillowcase—which is absorbent and actually pulls moisture away from your skin and hair—silk is gentle, nourishing, and hydrating to your face and tresses.

Gentle to your hair and skin: The soft charmeuse weave of our silk pillowcases helps tame tangles, bedhead, and frizzy hair while preventing sleep wrinkles (no pulling and tugging at delicate skin).

Breathable and temperature regulating: Silk fabric is breathable with natural thermoregulation that keeps you cool in the summer, warm in the winter, and sleeping comfortably year-round in any conditions.

Biodegradable:Silk is a natural fiber that is sustainable and biodegradable.
