Threads of History: Connecticut’s Surprising Connection to the Silk Industry

Just in time for National Connecticut Day on August 10th, this from Mulberry Park Silks highlights our home state's unusual chapter as a hub for silk production.

When you think about Connecticut, a few things likely come to mind: pizza, preppies, basketball, traffic on I-95, and Gilmore Girls. And all that's pretty accurate. But you may not know that Connecticut was once the center of the silk industry in the United States. Our team at Mulberry Park Silks is quite proud of the fact that we are a US-based company headquartered in Branford, Connecticut (unlike so many in the silk industry whose operations are entirely offshore). With August 10th being National Connecticut Day, we're taking the opportunity to zoom in a little closer on our location and highlight our state's unique-and surprising-place in the history of our favorite fabric, silk.

but not sure where to begin?

As part of our commitment to transparency, we are open about the quality of our silk. Our silk pillowcases, sheets, and bedding are made from 100% pure mulberry silk of the highest grade, 6A. Our silk pillowcases and silk sheet collections come in a range of momme weights, including 19, 22, and 30 momme, and a variety of colors. You can purchase a complete silk sheet set, or buy a silk flat sheet, silk fitted sheet, and-of course-silk pillowcases a la carte. And we are more than just bed sheets! Our silk collection includes other bedding essentials like a silk duvet cover (some prefer to skip the top sheet and sleep on the fitted sheet with no top sheet, directly under the silk comforter cover). Our silk accessories collection includes silk scrunchies; a silk glam band; silk sleep bonnets (our silk sleep cap is oversized to accommodate braids); a luxurious silk robe; a silk hair scarf; and bundled silk gift sets. We also sell silk cribs and toddler bed sheets.

As you shop for silk sheets, keep this in mind: only genuine silk delivers the luxury, beauty, and wellness benefits you crave. Real silk sheets keep your hair and skin hydrated (unlike cotton sheets which pull moisture away from your skin); prevent tangles, frizz, and bedhead; and naturally regulate body temperature. Remember that pure silk fabric is made from the hygienic, protective cocoon of the silkworm; it is naturally hypoallergenic and gentle on sensitive skin. Satin sheets, on the other hand, are made from petroleum-based polyester or nylon; a satin sheet set will never deliver the benefits of genuine mulberry silk bed sheets. Learn how to tell the difference between genuine silk vs. artificial satin.
