Silk Duvet Covers: The Ultimate in Style, Beauty, and Wellness

A high-quality silk duvet cover is an elegant and versatile addition to any silk bedding ensemble. But it's so much more than a lovely finishing touch to your silk bed sheets. Along with a luxe silk look and oh-so-soft feel that beckons you to dive in, a silk duvet cover from Mulberry Park delivers major beauty and wellness benefits. You'll sleep soundly, feel fabulous and wake beautiful -- all while surrounded by the luxurious comfort of pure mulberry silk charmeuse.

Why Choose a Silk Duvet Cover?

Not to be confused with a bedspread or coverlet, a silk duvet cover is a decorative fabric sleeve that protects your comforter (or "duvet insert") for the quintessential fluffy bed. Silk duvet covers are soft, super inviting and very on-trend. While duvet covers have traditionally been layered over a top bed sheet or blanket, they're increasingly styled in the European fashion as a simple top layer over the silk fitted sheet that replaces the flat sheet altogether.

However you choose to make your bed, a silk duvet cover should absolutely be in the mix, especially if you're foregoing the top sheet. A Mulberry Park silk duvet cover delivers all the same benefits to your skin, your sleep quality, and your wellness as our signature silk sheets and silk pillowcase collections while adding an unmistakably opulent look-and-feel to your bed.

Silk keeps your skin moisturized

Silk is a protein-based fiber that contains amino acids that help skin retain its natural moisture (Note: our silk pillowcases are also great for your face and hair. There are many reasons why you should choose a silk pillowcase.)

Silk will regulate your body temperature for maximum comfort

Silk is naturally temperature regulating. In warm weather, silk wicks away moisture from your skin without getting damp, keeping you cool and dry. In cold temperatures, silk's low conductivity allows the fabric to create a thin layer of insulation that can keep you warm. Natural silk is the perfect fabric for comfortable sleep year-round in any condition.

Silk is naturally hypoallergenic

Silk is the ideal fabric for allergy sufferers. Silk contains a protein called sericin. During the silk processing, the water-soluble protein sericin is removed. The protein retained in the silk is called fibroin, which is rich in 18 amino acids. These amino acids are responsible for silk's inherent resistance to dust mites, mold, and fungus, as well as its hypoallergenic properties.

Note: minimize allergies with alternative fill and down comforter options available here.

Silk is non-irritating to your skin

Silk is soft, smooth, and comfortable to the touch. Our pure mulberry silk charmeuse weave duvet cover is non-irritating to even the most sensitive skin; silk is often recommended for individuals with conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and acne. No fabric on Earth can compare to genuine, high-quality real silk.

Made of 100% natural silk

Mulberry Park duvet covers are 100% pure mulberry silk, a natural fiber. Like all of our products, our duvet covers are independently OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified to be free of any harmful chemicals (unlike satin, which is a man-made, chemical-based fabric).

Why Is Silk Better Than Cotton?

Many of us are used to sleeping on a variety of cotton sheets. Indeed, cotton is a popular choice for bed linens of all types, including duvet covers. However, there are some definite drawbacks to cotton bedding and accessories that make silk bed linen a more appealing option. Read more about silk's unique properties that outperform cotton for improved skin and hair health.

Silk verus cotton learn the benefits and differences
  • Cotton is naturally absorbent and can dry out hair and skin; in contrast, protein-based silk helps hair and skin retain moisture.
  • Organic cotton doesn't wick away moisture. When cotton bedding gets wet, it stays that way. This shuts down the cooling process of the body. Silk is both moisture-wicking and temperature regulating.
  • Cotton fibers can pull and tug on delicate hair and skin, contributing to bed head and sleep wrinkles. Silk is smooth, allowing hair and skin to glide gently against the surface.
  • Even the softest organic cotton doesn't feel as smooth and luxurious as pure silk.

It's time to switch to silk!

What to Look for in a Silk Duvet Cover

When it comes to choosing a silk duvet cover, a little education can go a long way toward ensuring you get the best value for your investment in a silk duvet cover. Here is a step by step breakdown of what to consider when buying a silk duvet cover.

First, choose only 100% pure mulberry silk, the material used in all Mulberry Park bed linen. Mulberry silk comes from the Bombyx mori silkworm, a species whose diet consists exclusively of leaves from the Mulberry tree. The finest mulberry silk in the world is grown and woven in China, where they've been making silk for more than 4,000 years. Mulberry silk threads are the best on Earth; they are smoother, stronger, and more uniformly colored than any other variety of silk. A single silk fiber is stronger than a steel fiber of the same diameter. At the same time, our charmeuse silk weave features a lustrous sheen on one side that is incredibly smooth to the touch.

Next, consider the grade and weight of silk in your duvet cover. All of Mulberry Park's bedding is woven from the finest silk fibers -- 6A Grade -- which give the material its smooth texture and softness. Our silk duvet covers are made from 22 momme weight silk fabric, a high tensile strength that makes them strong, durable, and luxurious. For comparison, 22 momme mulberry silk fabric equates to the weight of 900 thread count cotton sheet fabric.

Also, insist that any silk duvet cover you buy is safe and environmentally friendly. Look for silk duvet covers tested and certified by an independent agency or organization to be free from dangerous chemicals. All Mulberry Park products are OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified and have been tested and guaranteed to be free of all harmful substances, including toxins and irritants. If you don't see OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 clearly labeled, the product is not certified to be safe from harmful substances.

Finally, pay attention to the details. Make sure the duvet cover you purchase ismachine washable and resistant to shrinkage. Note finish details (our duvet covers come with classic button closure); color and size options; and the availability of coordinating accessories such as our 26”x26” European pillow sham to complete your duvet cover and bedding set. Mulberry Park Silks duvet covers come in Full/Queen Size and King Size.

How to Care for Your Silk Duvet Cover

With proper care and only a bit of extra attention, a Mulberry Park silk duvet cover should last a long time. It is machine washable and can also be laundered by hand (no need to dry clean).

Wash your silk duvet cover before the first use and regularly as needed; a removable comforter cover makes it easy to treat stains as they occur. Machine wash on a gentle cycle in cold water; hand wash in cold or lukewarm water is also fine. Choose a mild detergent made specifically for washing silk, such as Silk & Wool Detergent from Heritage Park Laundry Essentials. Spot treat stains carefully to avoid discoloration to the fabric. We also highly recommend using a mesh laundry bag to protect your silk duvet cover in the washing machine. Always hang your silk duvet cover to dry; it is lightweight and will dry quickly indoors or outside. Be sure to keep silk bedding away from direct sunlight (even inside!) while drying. Use a cool/warm iron to restore sheen if needed after washing. Click here for a guide on the Do's and Don'ts of Caring for your Silk.
