Mulberry Park Silks Talks Skin, Sun Safety, and Anti-Aging with Esthetician Kerry Spindler

Mulberry Park Silks Associate Brand Manager, Zoe Doyle, recently sat down to chat with Kerry Spindler, Boston-based esthetician and founder of Kerry Spindler Bespoke Aesthetics Spa. A three-decade veteran of the beauty industry, Kerry has built a reputation as a highly skilled professional and-as a skin cancer survivor-a sun safety advocate. Her work has been featured in New York Fashion Week, the Academy Awards, the Primetime Emmys, Essence Magazine, Project Runway All-Stars, and more.

They discussed sun safety, skincare routines, and-of course-the benefits of silk pillowcases. Here are some highlights:

MPS: What inspired you to pursue a career in beauty and aesthetics?

KS: Well, my career actually started in fashion. Although fashion and beauty can be hand in hand, I was diagnosed with Stage 2 melanoma when I was 27 and that shifted my perspective on the beauty industry. Many times in the fashion segment you see more of the superficial side of the business. Because of my own journey, I became a little more involved in the compassionate side. My sun safety efforts as well as helping people on their own journey become my life mission.

As a result of her experience, Spindler has a special focus at her spa on working directly with skin cancer patients to help them navigate their journey. She is also a prominent skin cancer awareness advocate and, as part of that effort, launched Sundicators, a line of bracelets that change color when it's time to reapply sunscreen.

MPS: You talk about a holistic approach that you combine with cutting-edge science. Can you tell us how you integrate these methods at [Kerry Spindler Bespoke Aesthetics Spa]?

KS: We combine holistic practices with cutting-edge science to provide effective skincare and beauty treatments. Holistic beauty focuses on treating the entire person, including their physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing rather than just addressing the superficial concerns. This entails using natural ingredients, promoting self-care practices, and considering the impact of lifestyle and the environment on the skin. When combined with cutting-edge science the holistic approach allows for the development of innovative and evidence-based skin care products and treatments.

At her spa, this includes technology like nanotechnology, bio-active compounds and peptides, and a more personalized approach that promotes overall skin wellness. She takes factors including lifestyle and environment (including water sources) to develop a custom treatment protocol for each patient to meet their individual needs.

MPS: Speaking of maintaining healthy skin and hair…how can a silk pillowcase become a part of maintaining skin and hair health?

KS: There are actually quite a few benefits. Using a silk pillowcase can reduce the friction on the skin and hair while sleeping. They also can prevent hair breakage which I know is a big concern. Lots of vitamins, again, water sources, the environment, and stress in general can definitely wreak havoc on our skin, hair, and nails, and using a silk pillowcase can definitely minimize some of the stressors that come with that.

Silk is also less absorbent than cotton and synthetics so it helps to maintain the skin's natural moisture and it prevents absorption of skin care products, allowing them to do the work while you sleep. A lot of times with a synthetic pillowcase, it really can essentially wipe away the benefits of the skin care products so we try to minimize that by using more of a natural fiber like silk. Also, a silk pillowcase is hypoallergenic, so for people with sensitivities or skin allergies or just allergies in general it's definitely something that would prevent dust mites and other allergens from accumulating.

Of course, this comes as no surprise to us here at Mulberry Park Silks, but it is always validating to have a professional weigh-in. We have long promoted the wellness and beauty benefits of sleeping on silk for healthier skin and hair as well as better sleep. Silk bedding is naturally hydrating to dry skin and hair; prevents bed head, breakage, and frizzy hair; and minimizes fine lines and wrinkles. The smooth surface of silk fabric is also gentle on sensitive skin; protein-based silk fiber is smooth, protective, and won't cause skin irritation.

MPS: Are there any things you want to plug right now, things that are important to you in your practice?

KS: Definitely sunscreen..the use of sunscreen is the most important anti-aging tool we can have in our arsenal, not just for the skin cancer prevention benefits. Cleansing twice a day. Your most important cleanse is the cleanse at the end of the day which washes the history of the environment away. Changing your pillowcase on a regular basis is important so that we can make sure we have a nice clean pillowcase every night…the silk definitely helps with that.

Kerry recommends Blue Lizard sunscreen, which is made in Australia. Australia has both the highest concentration of skin cancer in the world and the most skin cancer funding. Shop Blue Lizard sunscreen here and check out the entire interview below.
